WiSeNet Overview
WiSeNet is a testbed for wireless mesh networks and wireless ad-hoc network research in NCSU. WiSeNet is composed of total 70 nodes out of which 60 are installed on the 3 stories and 2 wings (CSC East wing and ECE west wing) of the EBII (Engineering Building II) on the Centennial Campus of NCSU. The remaining 10 nodes are installed in the lab for implementation and testing.
WiSeNet Technical Details
Each WiSeNet nodes is a Soekris net4826 board with a 266Mhz CPU, 128MB SDRAM and 128MBFlash. The nodes are powered using PoE (Power over Ethernet) through 6 CISCO PoE switches. Each node contains 2
MiniPCI? 802.11a/b/g cards having the Atheros chipset and dual omni-directional antennas. The nodes have Gentoo Linux with the 2.6.18 Linux Kernel. Madwifi driver is used for the wireless
MiniPCI? cards.
All the WiSeNet nodes are connected to a central servers (Titanium) over Ethernet. Since the nodes have limited storage capacity onboard, the nodes use the server for storage as well for loading of applications, modules, code and data using remote file-system over NFS. The NFS is optimized for simultaneous access from the large number of nodes. We have conducted several experiments with the nodes collecting tcpdump, routing and other intensive logs without any problems. By providing a development and cross compiling environment on the central server, it is effortless to install and provide various software and tools for each node. In addition, the central server also provides a bunch of scripts for automation of basic procedures (setting wireless parameters, starting and stopping routing protocols, gathering data, remote execution of commands, etc). A web interface to the CISCO switch allows remote rebooting of the nodes whenever required. A web interface to the entire WiSeNet testbed in the works.
The EBII building has
WiFi? coverage throughout. On the ground floor it has several classrooms and student lounges. On the second and third floor several research labs, meeting rooms and faculty offices are located. All the WiSeNet nodes share the network with NCSU
WiFi? Access Points (APs) and the devices using them for wireless access. On school days a large student population used the wireless facilities of the building. WiSeNet can be considered as a production level testbed because of this unique coexistence in an environment which is a real world scenario for various protocols and applications being researched, developed and tested using the testbed.

BIC LAB
BIC LAB accommodates 18 rack-mountable servers and all the servers are connected through gigabit network interfaces. All the machines in BIC LAB are connected through two FreeBSD machines running Dmmynet. The BIC Testbed enables use to perform experiments for TCP algorithms under controlled environments where all the testing parameters and results can be monitored.

Centaur LAB
Centaur Testbed is colocated at Centaur Lab in NCSU and is connected to the Internet through Internet 2 and National Lamda Rail (NLR).
Centaur is the home of the North Carolina Internet2 Technology Evaluation Center (NC-ITEC) chartered by Internet2 as a backbone test lab.
On a state-wide basis Centaur provides testing and consulting services for the North Carolina Networking Initiative (NCNI) and the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN).
